Black Friday VS Cyber Monday

The idea behind Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Our planet earth is divided by beautiful cultures and joyous traditions. Let’s discuss the most recent traditional practice of north Americans – Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

In the simplest of terms, Black Friday is an annual shopping event. After celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday, the Friday after calls for shopping. The event often lasts until the Monday after. The event marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season that remains through the end of the year. Cyber Monday, on the other hand, is the Monday after Black Friday. It is celebrated as the day of online shopping across the USA and nearby countries.

Why is it called Black Friday?

Back in the 1950s-60s, the Philadelphia police began using the term “Black Friday” referring to the day between Thanksgiving and Army-Navy game. A larger number of people were noticed shopping in the city on this day and the cops were bound to work long and late working hours to handle the crowds and the traffic that followed the joy of shopping. By the 1980s, this day proved to be a highly profitable one for the merchants across that region. To celebrate their success, they denoted this day as “Black Friday” as they ended up using only black ink used for profits and did not have to use red ink that denoted loss.

Back then, on Black Friday, merchants would campaign outside their stores to grab the best deals. Whereas nowadays, offline shopping in malls and stores along with online shopping on all-time favorite e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, etc. is seen across the continent. Black Friday has become highly popular across the world and is cherished in most countries offering mind-blowing deals in the name of Black Friday.

What is Cyber Monday?

As discussed above, Cyber Monday falls on the Monday after Black Friday. It is to put an end to the event denoting the beginning of the holiday shopping season. It is called Cyber Monday because, in the early 2000s, this Monday after Black Friday was seen taking on the shopping season online. The highest number of orders were placed online for the first time in the history of the e-commerce marketplace. Hence, it is celebrated as the cyber shopping day of the holiday shopping season. By 2014, this day was seen as the busiest day for online shopping platforms. The total sale on this day was recorded up to $2 billion becoming the greatest spending in US history.
